Overview
Pengwinner is an endless-runner survival game where the objective is to travel as far as possible while avoiding a variety of obstacles. The core tension comes from risk versus reward: dying results in a score of zero, while cashing out secures your current score based on distance traveled and any baby penguin bonus.
In Dash Mode (Survivor), players compete in real time to reach the finish line. Finishing rewards additional points based on speed, while dying before the finish awards points only based on distance reached.
Gameplay Elements
The game introduces players through an opening “How to Play” screen that explains controls and the cash-out mechanic. This screen automatically closes and begins gameplay after 30 seconds.
Settings Button: Opens the settings menu; disabled once gameplay begins
Score: Displays distance traveled and any baby bonus points
Dash Mode HUD: Shows player position, distance, and remaining time bonus
Controls
- Hop Forward: Tap the screen to move forward one tile; rapid tapping increases speed
- Directional Movement: Swipe and release left, right, forward, or backward to move one tile in that direction
- Slide Movement: Swipe and hold to continuously slide in a direction; release to stop
- Cash Out: Tap and hold the cash-out button to secure your score; completes when the circular meter fills before dying
Obstacle Types
Terrain & Static Hazards
Trees / Rocks block movement paths
Chasms cause instant death when fallen into
Water causes death unless using traversal objects
Moving Hazards
Cars move along roads and kill on impact
Log trucks kill on impact and obstruct visibility
Snow plows push the player back one lane on contact with snow blast
Traversal Objects
Logs float along rivers and can be used to cross water
Orcas act as moving platforms and launch players via blowholes
Icebergs allow traversal but break after being used
High-Speed Hazards
Trains kill on impact and are signaled by a red warning light
Blizzard follows from behind and accelerates over time
Boundaries
Side shadowy walls block players from leaving the main path
Eggs and Babies
Eggs randomly spawn on the field. When a player steps on an egg, a baby penguin hatches and follows with a slight delay. Nests appear later in the level, and guiding the baby to a tile adjacent to a nest delivers it safely for a higher reward.
- Deliver baby to a nest: +25 points
- Cash out with baby (no nest): +5 points
- Bonus points are only awarded if the player successfully cashes out
Game Modes
🐧 Standard Mode
An endless progression mode focused on maximizing score through distance and bonuses. Players must manually cash out to secure their score, with death resetting it to zero.
End Conditions
- Death: Ends the run and sets score to 0
- Cash Out: Ends the run and secures current score
Scoring
- Distance: +1 point per tile progressed
- Baby bonus: +5 (carry) or +25 (nest delivery)
- Cash Out: Required to keep score
🏁 Dash Mode (Survivor)
A real-time competitive race against other players. Reaching the finish line grants bonus points based on remaining time. Players who are eliminated early receive a score based on distance traveled. Note: Position of players’ ghosts is approximate.
End Conditions
- Finish: Ends the run and awards time bonus
- Death: Ends the run and scores based on distance reached
Scoring
- Distance: +1 point per tile
- Finish bonus: Remaining time converted to points (1 second = 10 points)
Settings
- Countdown: Displays time before auto-start
- SFX Slider: Adjusts sound effects volume
- Music Slider: Adjusts music volume
- Cash-Out Button Position Toggle: Changes button placement
- Swipe Sensitivity: Adjusts how far you need to swipe to move one tile
