Overview
Boggle is a skill-based variation of Hasbro’s Boggle where you make words to gain points. The letters have the point values according to Hasbro’s Scrabble game.
Rules
Each Boggle game consists of 3 rounds. The first round will consist of a grid of normal tiles only. The second and third rounds will add ‘Scrabble’ type bonus tiles.
How to Form Words
Each letter must be connected to the previous letter, either side-by-side or diagonally. No individual letter tile may be selected more than once.
Submitting Words
There are two ways to select letter tiles and submit words - dragging or tapping.
- Dragging: Drag letter tiles in a row to form words. Release dragging motion to automatically submit words for points. Valid words will earn players points! Delete and submit buttons are not permitted.
- Tapping: Tap a set of letters to form words. Tap the last letter twice or use the green checkmark box found in the letter tray to manually submit words for points.
Valid Word Creation
Each word must be at least 2 letters, but not more than 16 letters in a 4 x 4 letter game. In a 5 x 5, proper nouns and abbreviations are not permitted.
Only words in the NASPA © 2020 tournament word list are allowed. You can check the validity of a word using the “challenge tool” here.
When a word is selected, any word formed will be checked against the dictionary. If a valid word is created, it will show the potential score for the word in the Letter Tray. Non-valid words will not show a potential score in the Letter Tray. If a valid word is submitted, the player’s score will go up accordingly.
Terminology
Letter Tile: A letter tile refers to one of the wooden tiles that has a letter presented on it along with their point value and if they are double/triple letter or word bonus tiles.
Letter Tray: The letter tray is the section above the Letter Container where every letter selected is placed to create words to submit.
Word List: The word list is the list above the Letter Tray where every valid word made is put alongside their respective point values.
Scoring
Each time you create a valid word on the grid, you receive the sum of the points for each letter in the word.
Bonus Tiles
Increase player score by forming words using Bonus Tiles. Bonus Tiles increase the point values of single-letter tiles and formed words. Distinguish Bonus Tiles by color and a two-letter abbreviation on the top left of the letter tile.
- Double Letter (DL): Doubles the value of the letter tile
- Triple Letter (TL): Triples the value of the letter tile
- Double Word (DW): Doubles the value of the word
- Triple Word (TW): Triples the value of the word
All Letters Bonuses
Players will earn 100 points for using all the letters in the letter grid to form words during any round. You can earn this bonus once for each of the three rounds.
5 Letter+ Words Bonuses
Earn bonus points for five-letter and longer words, for example:
- (Number of letters used – 4) x 5 = bonus points
- Example, player made a 6-letter word:
- (6 - 4) x 5 = 10 bonus points
Upgrading Word Scores
A player can normally only score a word once per round, but it is possible to upgrade the score for a previously scored word in a round if a higher scoring configuration is found. That means that if a player scores a word using no bonus tiles, but then later in the round the player makes the same word again using bonus tiles (thereby increasing the score they should earn for that word), the difference in points should be awarded.
Example - In round two the player makes the word cat (C-A-T) without using bonus tiles and scores 5 points. Later in round two the player makes the word “C-A-T" again but uses a different C that has a double letter bonus. Because the point value of the new configuration is higher, the player is allowed to make the word again but only scores the difference. This would normally score 8 points but since the player already scored 5 points for C-A-T, 3 points are scored instead (the difference).
Tips
- Only words in the NASPA © 2020 tournament word list are allowed. You can check the validity of a word using the “challenge tool” here.
- Try to earn the 'All Letters Bonus' - you get an extra 100 points each round if you use all the letters. A small pink dot appears on the tile if you use it that round to help keep track.
- In round 2 and 3 focus on the Double/Triple word bonus and the Double/Triple letter bonus.
- Look for common suffixes or prefixes like -er -ed -es / re- de- ex- in- to get more points from smaller words. Making words plural with an “S” is another easy way to increase your word list.
- Earn bonus scores for five-letter or longer words.
- When tapping letters to form words, on the last letter tapped, tap it again to automatically submit the word.
- Each word must be at least 2 letters, but not more than 16 letters in a 4 x 4 letter game. In a 5 x 5, proper nouns and abbreviations are not permitted.
